Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is also called gluten-sensitive enteropathy.

Symptoms of celiac disease are diarrhea (often foul smelling), gas (flatulance) and abdominal cramping or bloating.  This is caused by an inherited inability to tolerate gluten, which is found in wheat, rye and barley.  Eating foods containing gluten, for someone with celiac disease, damages the lining of the gastrointestinal track by causing immunologically-mediated inflammation.

Diagnosis of celiac disease:  blood tests for certain enzymes and total IgA can point the way to a diagnosis of celiac disease.  Upper GI endoscopy with biopsies of the lining of the intestine is needed to be certain of the diagnosis.

Treatment of celiac disease:  Gluten must be avoided!  Since it is present in so many supermarket and restaurant foods, avoiding gluten can be a real challenge.  Fortunately, many business entities are becoming sensitive to the needs of this population:  Hardee's, Chex, Gluten-free Mall.  This website lets you view gluten-free menus of many national chains.

Many local Columbus restaurants have Gluten free menu options.  Here are a few (if you know of others please email us the information so we can make it available to all!)
