Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is an itchy scaly skin disease that usually starts in early childhood.  DERMATITIS means inflaming the skin, and ATOPIC means related to allergies. It is one of the most common chronic skin disorders.

In a small child, the redness and itching is usually on the face and scalp.  In a school-age child or older, it is more commonly on the skin on the insides of the elbows and knees.

Bad News:  The exact cause of AD isn't well-defined, and there is no cure.

Good News:  Avoiding the triggers (allergic and others), medications and skin treatment can make the symptoms much better.
